Hidden Copy-Paste Features Your OS Already Has

Copy and paste feels solved — until you discover the features your operating system shipped years ago that most people never open. These are the ones worth enabling today.
Clipboard history (Windows)
Press Windows + V to open clipboard history. It stores your last 25 copied items and syncs them across your devices. The first press asks you to enable it; after that, Windows + V is the most underused feature on the OS.
Format-free pasting
Every platform has "paste without formatting" — Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+Opt+V on macOS. When text arrives with fonts, colours and URLs baked in, this strips everything down to plain text.
Text from images (macOS + mobile)
On macOS, right-click any image and choose "Copy Subject" to lift the foreground subject, or use Live Text to select text inside a photo. On iPhone and Android, point the camera at printed text and copy it directly. The clipboard just got a lot more capable.
Pinned items and Unicode entry
Pin frequent items to the top of clipboard history so they never scroll away. On Windows and macOS, character viewers (Win+; or Ctrl+Cmd+Space) type emoji, symbols and accented characters without hunting through web pages.
After pasting from a doc, run the text through the Word Counter — pasted formatting often hides doubled spaces and line breaks that need cleaning.
Is clipboard history private?
It lives on your device, though syncing to other signed-in devices is on by default in some OS. Turn off cloud sync in settings if that concerns you.
Does Clipboard history ever clear itself?
Items remain until you clear history or restart on some platforms. Pin anything you need to keep long-term.
