The 12-Point SEO Checklist for Tool Websites

Tools sites get indexed differently from blogs. This is the exact checklist we use before launching any new tool page.

Tool pages rank differently from blog posts: users want a result, not a story. Search engines reward the same thing — pages that answer the intent immediately with a working tool. This checklist is what we run before publishing any new tool.

Technical foundations

  1. One clear H1 that states exactly what the tool does, with the keyword in it.
  2. A unique title tag under 60 characters and a unique meta description under 160.
  3. Canonical URL pointing to the tool page — no self-duplication.
  4. Clean URL: /tools/percentage-calculator, never /tool.php?id=4.
  5. Descriptive alt text on any image, and a meaningful file name.

Structured data

  1. SoftwareApplication schema so the tool can surface with rich results.
  2. BreadcrumbList schema matching the visible breadcrumbs.
  3. FAQPage schema only where questions genuinely appear on the page.
  4. Organization / WebSite schema sitewide, once, in the header.

Content that earns the rank

  1. A 150–300 word intro explaining what the tool does and when to use it.
  2. A working example with real numbers in the page copy.
  3. Frequently asked questions that match real search queries.
  4. Internal links to related tools and one relevant guide.

Measurement

After publishing, track three numbers: impressions for the target query, clicks, and (crucially) time-on-page. A tool page that users leave in two seconds tells you the tool or the page is not answering intent.

The biggest ranking signal for a tool page is simple: does it work? A broken or slow tool page will rank poorly no matter how good the metadata is.

How long does it take for a tool page to rank?

Typically 4–12 weeks for new domains, faster if the tool targets long-tail queries with clear intent. Focus on one well-built page at a time.

Should I write a blog post for every tool?

No — but a related guide or comparison targeting a different query multiplies the tool's reach. Link them both ways.
